Shredder 36 Black Edition: what’s new in Kids Quads’ best-selling range

The Shredder 36 black edition is an upgrade to one of the most popular quad bikes available, for families that want more from a quad bike.

What’s actually different

The headline change is the motor. The standard Shredder 36 runs a brushed motor; the Black Edition swaps that for a brushless one, with vents built into the housing to help it run cooler under sustained load. Brushless motors lose less energy to internal friction than brushed ones, which is why the difference shows up mainly as extra torque rather than extra top speed. That matters most on slopes and rough or uneven ground, where a brushed motor has to work harder to hold its power output. On a flat driveway, you’d probably struggle to tell the two apart.

The tyres are bigger too: a 13-inch tyre on a 6-inch rim, up from the standard model’s wheels. That gives more ground clearance for rougher terrain, and it’s paired with spring suspension, two springs at the front and one at the rear, which takes some of the impact out of uneven ground before it reaches the rider rather than after.

Braking has been upgraded to match the extra capability elsewhere. There’s a disc on each side at the front and a twin-caliper disc at the rear. On a quad built to cover rougher ground at a higher top speed than the standard model, stronger braking isn’t a nice-to-have; it’s the part that has to keep pace with everything else that’s changed.

None of this changes what the quad is fundamentally for. It’s still a 4 to 9 age-range model with a 36V, 1000W setup, moulded footrests and a fairing to keep hands and feet away from moving parts. What’s changed is how well it copes with ground that isn’t a flat garden.

Speed and control

Parents get the same three-position key control as the rest of the range, but the ceiling is higher on this model: 3mph, 8mph or 15mph once the key comes out. Range is 20 to 25km per charge, depending on the terrain and how heavy-footed the rider is, and a flat battery takes 4 to 6 hours to charge back up.

The rest of the safety features carry across from the wider range rather than being specific to this model: LED headlights, a rear light that doubles as a brake light, a horn, and an LCD display showing speed, mileage and battery level, so a parent watching from the side of a field can see the same numbers the child can see from the seat. Rider weight limit is 9.5 stone (60kg), and the quad itself weighs 66kg, heavier than the standard model by virtue of the upgraded parts. Seat height is 500mm, noticeably higher off the ground than the Sport 36V we’ve written about separately, which is worth knowing if a family is deciding between the two rather than moving up from one to the other.

Is the black edition worth it?

If a child rides on grass, mud, gravel or anything with a slope, the Black Edition is built for that specifically, and the standard model would be working harder than its motor and tyres are designed for.

Who it’s actually for

If a child has outgrown a smaller, more stability-focused model like the Sport 36V and is confident enough to ride on terrain that isn’t flat and mowed, this is the version built for that move. It’s new enough to the range that there aren’t reviews on the product page yet. We’ll update this article once there’s feedback worth passing on, rather than guessing at how it’s landing with buyers.

Available now in black, alongside the rest of the Shredder range, with an assembled-and-tested delivery option for an extra £40 if a family would rather not build it themselves before the first ride. At 1070mm by 710mm by 700mm, it’s a similar footprint to most of the range, so storage in a shed or garage shouldn’t be a different consideration from any other model.

There are also bundle options if a family’s buying gear alongside the quad rather than just the quad itself: a Pit Lane Bundle at £539.95, a Qualifying Bundle at £564.95, and a Race Bundle at £599.95, each adding progressively more accessories on top of the base price. Whether any of those are worth it depends entirely on what’s already sitting in the garage; we’d only point a buyer towards one if they’d genuinely be purchasing the included items separately anyway.
